In the past, Congress News has been available to Congress attendees via the print edition of Congress News while on site at Congress, and to those at home via the Congress News Online Web site and Congress News e-mails. With today’s technology, however, we are now able to offer Congress News through even more electronic mediums such as RSS (real simple syndication) and Twitter™.
Both RSS and Twitter are electronic information sources of continually changing Web content such as headlines and blog posts. Each medium requires a subscription to the content either by “following” an individual or company as in Twitter or by subscribing to content from a Web site as in RSS. After subscribing to one or more sources, all content will be filtered into one central location (ie, RSS reader or Twitter page).
Congress News RSS
The Congress News RSS feed will feature regularly updated news stories from Congress that individuals can subscribe to using an RSS reader or a Web browser (eg, Internet Explorer). By using an RSS reader, individuals will be able to subscribe to one or more RSS feeds and have them all filter into one central location, whether it be on a computer or cell phone. Some popular RSS readers for computers include:
- Bloglines for Windows® or Mac operating systems (OS)®,
- Google Reader™ for Windows or Mac OS,
- NewsGator’s FeedDemon for Windows and NetNewsWire for Mac OS, and
- SharpReader for Windows.
Additionally, RSS readers are available on cell phones with data plans such as the iPhone® and BlackBerry. To download an RSS reader for one of these phones, visit an online applications (apps) store and search RSS reader. With an RSS reader directly on your cell phone, the latest news from Congress will be available literally at your fingertips.
A step-by-step guide for subscribing to the news feed is featured in the second portion of this article as part of pre-Congress news coverage for Congress News Online. Also, be sure to read the March Tapping into Technology column in the AORN Journal for more information about RSS.
Twitter
This year, the main AORN twitter page will feature Congress-specific information during the week of Congress. For example, tweets could involve room changes, quotes from general sessions or keynote speakers, general announcements, giveaways for Twitter users, and the latest Congress News RSS feed. Additionally, Twitter users will be able to follow and receive updates from AORN’s list of more than 90 Congress exhibitors. Twitter can be accessed by visiting the AORN twitter page on the computer or on your personal cell phone using either your cell’s web browser or by downloading a twitter application from your online applications (apps) store.
