Social Media Icons
The Congress News RSS feed is available by navigating to the Congress News Online home page. Icons for the Congress Voices blog, Congress News RSS, AORN’s Twitter™ page, and AORN’s Facebook® page (pictured to the right) are located on the upper right-hand side of this page. Select the RSS icon. You will be directed to the main Congress News RSS feed page where you will see the latest stories. Next, select the “RSS available” link, located directly above the first story headline. Once you subscribe to either RSS feed, you will then be directed to a preview page of the news feed.

If you already have an RSS reader, copy the URL from the address bar (http://www.aorncongress.org/rss/0A1528D5-0FB3-BF7C-A996974EC21FBD6F/) and paste it into the appropriate field in your chosen RSS reader. If you do not currently use an RSS reader, there are several options to choose from depending on how you prefer to receive your information (eg, web-based, cell phone application, desktop application).

Subscribe using Internet Explorer®. Internet Explorer is the default web browser for most Windows users. Following is a basic guide for subscribing to the Congress News RSS feed from the preview page.

  • Select “Subscribe to this feed” in the pale yellow box at the top of the screen.
  • A grey box will appear on your screen with the name of the feed (ie, Congress News) and desired location (ie, Feeds).
  • Select “Subscribe” to place the Congress News RSS feed in your Favorites menu indicated with an orange star on the left-hand side of the Internet Explorer tool bar, under the Feeds tab.
  • For even quicker access to the feed, you may also choose to add the feed to your Favorites bar, which is located on the same line as your favorites menu.
  • To do this, simply select the white box located under the location field on the grey box. You will see the words “Add to Favorites Bar” next to the box.
  • Select “Subscribe”
  • The Congress News feed will now appear on your Favorites bar as well as in your feeds menu.

For more detailed instructions including screen shots, please read the March 2010 Tapping Into Technology column in the AORN Journal. Be sure to read the June 2010 Tapping into Technology column to learn how to organize your feeds in Internet Explorer.

Subscribe using Firefox®.  Firefox is a popular web browser that can be downloaded for free by visiting http://www.firefox.com. The format looks very similar regardless of whether you are running Windows or Mac Operating Systems. The process for subscribing is similar to that of Internet Explorer; however, instead of the feed being added to your Favorites menu or Favorites bar, you will add the feed to your bookmark menu or your bookmark bar. These are the same concepts, just different terms.

  • At the top of the preview page, you should notice a pale yellow box with a large RSS icon and a drop-down menu next to the words “Subscribe to this Feed Using.” This menu provides you with a list of options for your RSS feed (eg, Live Bookmarks, Bloglines). For this example, make sure that “Live Bookmarks is selected.
  • Select “Subscribe Now.”
  • A grey box will appear with the name of the feed (ie, Congress News) and a drop-down menu with a list of location options (eg, bookmarks tool bar, bookmarks menu).
  • Select “Bookmarks Menu” if you would like the feed to appear in the bookmarks menu, located at the top of the screen. With this option, you will be able to locate the feed by selected Bookmarks and then the name of the feed (ie, Congress News)
  • Select “Bookmarks Tool Bar” if you would like the feed to be featured on the bookmarks toolbar, located under the web address bar. With this option, every time you open the Firefox browser, you will see a folder with an RSS icon and the name of the feed next to it. Select the icon or name to view the feed. You also will be able to access the feed through the bookmarks menu.

For more information about subscribing to and organizing RSS feeds using Firefox, read the June 2010 Tapping Into Technology column in the AORN Journal.
