A Look at Issues Facing the Obama Administration
David Gergen, Political Analyst

Session 3791, 1.0 CH Track: P

Upon entering office, President Barack Obama inherited a substantial list of problems. He immediately needed to address not only the economy but also the situation in Iraq, where neither the status quo, nor a precipitous withdrawal, is an option. The series of economic issues facing the country including a climbing deficit, falling dollar, and exploding growth in Social Security and Medicare will demand not only attention, but a bi-partisan solution. In addition, the looming expiration of the Kyoto Treaty will force President Barack Obama to reevaluate our climate change diplomacy and environmental leadership mandate. While on the presidential campaign trail, the media focuses on the horse race and the candidates’ tactical maneuvers for additional votes. But, President Barack Obama faces difficult decisions that will have a lasting global impact. David Gergen, a trusted advisor to four Presidents, outlines for audiences what is in store and how the issues will be framed.
