This presentation will identify patient outcomes as well as intraoperative considerations for minimally invasive surgery in neonates. It will also focus on the challenges that are encountered with MIS in neonates. Recently, advances in video technology and instrumentation have made minimally invasive surgery possible in infants and small children. Prior to this many of the techniques for endoscopic procedures had not been available to use in small children due to size and safety issues.
Post-Op Acuity in the Ambulatory Surgery Center
Catherine M. Moses, RN, CNOR, CPHQ
Session 3736, 1.5 CH, Track: A, PS
Do you work in the Ambulatory Surgical setting? A great deal of information and guidance has been documented in the screening of ASC patients, but little has been written about the post-operative phase of care. Today, ASCs are doing more complex procedures and patients require a longer recovery time to facilitate lower complication rates, readmission rates and optimal outcomes, and increased patient satisfaction. An acuity system to assist in predicting longer stays, preparing the patient to expect a longer stay, and to establish appropriate staffing for the PACU, while keeping budgetary concerns in check, can be a great PI tool for staff and managers.
Finally-No Surgical Smoke in the OR
Kay Ball, PhD, RN, CNOR, FAAN
Evangeline Dennis, RN, CNOR, CMLSO
Brenda Ulmer, RN, MN, CNOR
Session 3744, 1.5 CH, Track: C, PS
Get the most up-to-date information regarding surgical smoke. When the AORN Surgical Smoke Evacuation Tool Kit was introduced in 2009, research demonstrated that practices to evacuate electrosurgical smoke were inconsistent and lacking. The most popular method to evacuate plume was to use the “suction only” method and not employ recommended smoke evacuators or inline filters. Throughout the years the multitude of lectures, articles, and communication on surgical smoke hazards have increased the passion to follow smoke evacuation recommendations and overcome the barriers that prevent compliance. This session will discuss the impact of the Tool Kit and provide innovative and effective tips on implementing and maintaining a comprehensive smoke evacuation program.

Using a simulator, teams will be given an opportunity to practice fire suppression and OR room evacuations. Exercises will last for 20 minutes, and there will be three sessions per hour. A sign up sheet will be posted in advance.
Impact of Integrative Health Approaches with Pediatric Patients
Jane M Murphy, RN, MS, PNP-BC, FCN
Stella Harrington, RN, BSN, CNOR
Marilyn Moonan, RN, BSN, CNP, CTTM
Session 3763, 1.5 CH, Track: P
Pediatric transplant nurses at a large urban hospital have embraced an integrative health approach with patients which spans the care continuum. Patients and families are encouraged to use non-pharmacological integrative health approaches beginning in the preoperative phase, and continued through discharge and maintained at home. This transplant multidisciplinary team supports the continuation and use of the integrative health interventions with the pediatric patients. Nurses have become skilled clinicians in integrative health modalities including therapeutic touch, guided imagery, Reiki and Relaxation massage. Embrace the power of touch and take away some great concepts and apply this insight to your own practice.

This engaging and interactive session will make bylaws’ arcane connotation come alive and directly relevant to participants. Examples from the current and possible changes to AORN bylaws will be used to illustrate how bylaws define the interrelationship between organizations and members generally.
