Safety audits are required by ANSI, OSHA, and the Joint Commission, audits are essential to quality assurance and practice improvement. Perioperative nurses are often responsible for conducting or assisting with audits, yet have no simple, clinically relevant model to follow. This session will provide you the key components to create your audit tool.
Joint Commission Reminder: If it looks like an OR, It’ll be Surveyed as an OR
David Wyatt, RN, BSN, MPH, MA, CNOR
Mary Jane Edwards, RN, CNOR
Session 3778, 1.5 CH, Track: L/M, PS
This session will identify two strategies to ensure equitable real estate access to all users while defining key metrics that demonstrate the inter-relationship between traditional and nontraditional interventional procedures. This session will also introduce the concept of shared resources – in theory and practice. As technology advances, new procedures and equipment compete for OR real estate and resources, from nursing to anesthesiology. Cardiologists and interventional radiologists schedule cases in the operating room, or perform procedures that contain key surgical elements, outside of the traditional OR. Expensive technology, such as the hybrid operating room, underscores the metamorphosis of interventional procedures. Non-traditional surgical teams need focused supervision to ensure compliance and consistent quality patient care. Personnel management challenges include matrix reporting confusion, cost center clashes and inconsistent performance expectations.

Surgical Safety: It Takes a System
John F. Harrington, CMI
John L. (Jack) McCarthy MBA
Session 3901, 1.5 CH, Track: C, E,L/M, P, PS
Surgical error is a major public health issue. A majority of inpatient adverse events are related to surgical care and more than half are preventable. Previously, an understanding about the etiology for surgical error was limited; however, recently a significant improvement in our understanding of these issues has come about from an analysis of malpractice claims data. With this knowledge, several interventions were designed which have significantly impacted the number of surgical errors and overall mortality associated with surgery.
Drawing on extensive data from the Harvard Medical Institutions, the evolving understanding of surgical error will be outlined along with a discussion of potential opportunities to address these issues. Additionally, several successful interventions will be outlined along with common features indicative of successful initiatives.

Surgical Services Pep Rally-Mandatory Fun
Maureen Chadwick, RN, MSN, NE-BC
Session 3789, 1.5 CH, Track: C, PS
This session will explore the pep rally concept -- a new and creative way to communicate essential information to the surgical services department team, leaders and surgeons. Leaders were challenged with efforts to ensure communication of national patient safety goals, hospital strategic initiatives and department specific opportunities. In this organization the leadership team had traditionally used the lecture approach to communicate an annual state of the union to our heart center staff and subsequentlysurgical services. Due to busy work schedules and cases lasting longer than scheduled, it was difficult to have good attendance and hold anyone’s attention for a one hourlecture. This allowed the opportunity to recognize that they needed to identify a creative way to involve staff, seniorleadership and physicians to communicate initiatives in a fun way that would hold everyone’s attention as well as have everyone retain this information. The pep rally concept was born from these challenges.

The demand for perioperative nurses outweighs the supply. Despite these challenges, practicing perioperative registered nurses have the opportunity to encourage
interested individuals to enter the nursing profession through formal and informal mentoring activities and behaviors.
